Press Release: The Inspirational Nature of Determination

- September 19 2011-

There are more people in the world who have climbed Mount Everest than there are people who have run over 100 marathons and ultra-marathons.  Running marathons involves far more than conditioning, traveling, and time commitment; it involves steadfast determination, the will to push limitations and triumph over them, and tenacity.  In The Messengers, author Malcolm Anderson interviews 120 athletes from around the world who have run over 100 marathons, some of whom have run 1,000 marathons, truly motivated and determined individuals who have faced and overcome the odds in the pursuit of lofty goals.

Among the many inspirational stories is that of Christian Hottas, a man from Hamburg who runs between 80 and 171 marathons each year.  Hottas introduced his wife, Barbara Szlachetka, to marathon running; she went on to set three Polish National Records in 24 Hours and six Polish National Records in 48 Hours, among other accomplishments, before being diagnosed with colon cancer in July of 2004.  After having a small operation on Wednesday, she ran the Longford Marathon in Ireland the following Sunday, and ran a total of 27 marathons after her diagnosis.  The last run that Barbara was able to do was when she joined her husband for his 1,000th marathon before her death in 2005.

It is stories like those of Christian and Barbara that are a true testament to the human spirit, willpower, and determination.  The Messengers offers its readers many such stories from all corners of the globe, providing motivation and determination to its readers.  The stories are filled with courage, tenacity, adversity, accomplishment, and success that are certain to inspire; it is a must-read for anyone who is a marathon runner or thinking of becoming a runner, as well as for those who love stories about the power of the human will.
